How often should you actually clean your carpet?

Every 6 months. Here's why that schedule keeps carpet cleaner and makes it last longer.

Search this question and you'll often get a flat answer: once a year. We recommend every 6 months. Soil, oils and dander build up between cleanings whether or not the carpet looks dirty, and a year is long enough for that buildup to start working down into the fibers and the pad.

What builds up between cleanings

  • ✓Kids and pets — both add oils, dander and accidents that regular vacuuming can't reach below the surface.
  • ✓High-traffic paths — hallways and the route to the kitchen wear and soil far faster than a formal living room nobody sits in.
  • ✓Allergy or asthma concerns — trapped dust and dander build up between cleanings regardless of how the carpet looks.
  • ✓Light carpet color — soiling shows up sooner on light carpet, which usually means it gets cleaned more often by necessity.

Why every 6 months

Twice a year removes the soil before it has a chance to settle in for good. Traffic lanes don't get the chance to wear in, spots come out more easily, and the carpet never gets to the point where one cleaning can't bring it back.

Don't wait for the calendar if the carpet tells you sooner. If a traffic lane looks visibly different from the rest of the room, or a spot keeps reappearing after you vacuum it, it's due.

“Grit is abrasive. Leaving it in the pile is what grinds carpet fibers down — cleaning doesn't wear carpet out faster, it's what keeps it from wearing out at all.”

Why waiting too long backfires

There's a common worry that frequent cleaning shortens carpet life. It's backwards. Sharp-edged grit tracked in from outside acts like sandpaper on carpet fibers every time someone walks across it. The longer that grit sits in the pile, the more fiber damage it causes — cleaning removes the abrasive, it doesn't cause the wear.

The trade-off with waiting

Beyond wear, some stains genuinely become harder to remove the longer they set — especially anything with dye, like wine or juice, and pet accidents that migrate into the pad. A stain treated within a day or two comes out far more reliably than one that's had weeks to bond with the fiber.

Worth knowing

Hot water extraction pulls moisture — and the soil in it — back out of the pad, so a proper clean shouldn't leave carpet damp for days. If a service leaves your carpet wet for 24+ hours, that's usually a sign of an underpowered extraction, not a deeper clean.

The short version

Have your carpet professionally cleaned every 6 months. It keeps grit from grinding down the fibers and stains from setting in. And if a lane or spot is visibly bothering you before then, don't wait for the date.
